Golf Swing Series: Thoughts on Your Mental Game

Author: Bill Maitland

I think you would agree that even the most positive person in the world has negative thoughts on the golf course. Certain situations bring doubt to the most stalwart golfer. He thinks that he must just nip this ball perfectly and get it just by the pin or even better into the hole. He sets up and he feels anxious. He has played this shot so often at practice. Still, he has to get this just right. He makes his swing, and because of his state of mind, what does he do? He looks up too soon, and duffs the shot. The ball goes half way and he has lost a shot. All because of his negative state of mind. His anxiety. He moves on to the next tee thinking what may have been, and also being aware that this is an exasperating game and impossible to tame. It is fatal to take the game of golf too easily, and think you have mastered it. If you reach this state of mind then that is when things start to go dreadfully wrong.

It is fatal to become too sure of your self. All this means that something has to be done to the frame of mind that results in negativity. It is possible to do things on the course to develop a more positive attitude as you make your golf swing on the tee or hit shots around the greens. I think you will agree that it is impossible to think of two things at the same time. Right?

Well, just before you walk up to hit your tee shot, you say to yourself, I can I can I can I can over and over until you have hit your ball. There will be no room for negative thoughts, and because you have not thought much about your swing as you have been saying I can you will be amazed at the result. Give it a try.
